Farmers, government, and Indian media

Why Indian Farmers are protesting against the new farm bill?

In the last few days, farmers from several states of India are protesting against the newly passed Farm bills by the government. Mainly the protest was initiated by farmers of different states from North India like Haryana and Punjab but after that, farmers of many other states like MP, Andhrapradesh, Tamilnadu, and many more joined the movement of protesting against the government. Farmers of Haryana and many other states were beaten up by government servants for protesting. By ‘Adhyadesh’ (Power of President) 3 Farm bills were passed in Loaksabha and are further sent to get passed in Rajyasabh as well. But now all opposition parties are opposing and protesting against the government for passing these bills. Not only oppositions but supporting parties of government like Akali Dal are also protesting against the Farm bills.

According to the government, these farm bills are beneficial for farmers to get the max and best selling price of their commodities but farmers are not at all in favor of the government of passing these Farm bills. Whereas on the other hand government is going to reduce the priority of APMC (Agriculture Produce Market Committee)? Once after these bills come in the act, farmers will have the freedom to sell their commodities outside the market if they want so that they can earn and get the best actual price of their products as per to its quality. As here government claims that these bills are for the betterment of farmers, instead of believing in these bills farmers are afraid of, that after once activation of this new farm bill they might even get the MSP (Minimum Support Price) of their commodities.

Past situation

Before1950, Indian framers were dependent on moneylenders for selling their commodities. At that time the moneylenders were not giving the actual price of commodities to farmers, the effect of which most of the farmers were in debt. So the government took steps to encourage the Indian farmers and help them, so they made a committee APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee). The government made this committee at the state level for each state where farmers and moneylenders of that state come under the government using APMC. In APMC no one can freely sell or purchase on any commodity. The moneylender has to take a license for purchasing or selling of the commodities. Also, the government announced in APMC that farmers will get MSP (Minimum Support Price) of their commodities. If any treader will not purchase their products then the government will buy it on the MSP rate. Now the scheme of buying their product at MSP rate which lies under APMC, there is a middle man between the buyer(businessman ) and the seller(farmer) who manage to make out a huge amount of commission and even sometimes resist to give MSP to the farmers whose commodities are not sold. So to eliminate such huge loss of farmers now the government is going to bring some changes within the structure and some other changes in structure bypassing these new farm bills

Government and irresponsible Media

Farmers are the backbone of our Indian economy. 60% of people in our country are still dependent on the farming and agriculture sector. If farmers are protesting against the bills then the government should focus, listen, and discuss it with them. Other than this where media of any country plays an important role in highlighting such serious eye-catching issues of nation, especially of that sector in which the majority of the population of the country is involved. The media of the nation should highlight and help to raise the voice of local people up to the government and draw the attention on what other sensitive or important problems or things are going in the country like unemployment, falling GDP issues, farmer issues, youth issues, etc. Instead of focusing on such issues, the media is continuously focusing more on how Bollywood well-known celebrities are involved in drug nexus, the lifestyle of an actress in jail, and all other bullshit. Day by day media is losing its identity and the actual reason for its being, by such careless behavior. The media is only concentrating on the real news of a fake world (Bollywood) and the more worst thing is many people indirectly supporting these news channel shows by watching them. We want debates on new farm bills, on farmers problems, and on the nation’s other necessary topics which directly or indirectly are relevant to the progress of the nation but we are given the extended and useless news updates of how famous actress is involved in drugs and how the lifestyle of an actress is in jail after been arrested.
