Me too: an incomplete movement

The me too movement first appeared in India in 2018. Its impact was seen in every sphere of public life. Beginning with Bollywood, then news and media, not a single field remains. We will talk about all this in stages later.

Let’s begin by starting…

Tarana Burke started me too in 2006. According to her, while she was working as a teacher, he came across an incident of sexual harassment against women. He works in the US and while he was working on a self-worth program, a 12-year-old girl confronted him about her relationship with her 21-year-old boyfriend. After hearing the whole story she had to say that what the girl thought was a relationship was really a crime. Shortly afterward, another 13-year-old girl accused him of sexually abusing her. Tarana said she could not give any response to the girl at that time. But later she realized that all he had to say was, me too.”

And from there began a movement that had never begun in the past.

A movement was launched to get social justice, women’s empowerment, and break up women’s silence.

Its main goal was to arouse sympathy for women who were physically abused, to try to save those who were not prepared to fight on their own and to build unity among such exploited women. Before we discuss the Me to movement,

we need to understand three words.

The first word is sexual abuse,

often in the case of needy women who do not like it but have to let themselves be, is sexually abused.

Another term is Sexual Harassment,

often based on the behavior of one’s male coworkers in the workplace. Speaking ambiguous dialogues, touching an unwanted place under the pretext of work, or physically hurting a female employee under work pressure.

The third term is Sexual Assualt,

in which a woman is sexually assaulted. It is nothing less than rape.

Tarana Burke’s me too is running a movement so that women can protest against these three. What started in 2006 took until 2017 to reach the masses.

The words were written on Twitter by Hollywood actress Harvey Weinstein with the hashtag,

“If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote #metoo as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.”

The whole incident took place in front of an American celebrity. Since then, many such actresses have written their own experiences. And #metoo started.

These actresses include Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Lawrence, Uma Thurman and many more

. There were discussions on social media. There were reactions from the people. And there were a lot of demonstrations. This movement is over race and age. If there is exploitation in any dimension, it is a matter of exposing the exploiters.

Currently, in addition to #metoo, #idid #ihave #iwill #himtoo also brings similar things.

According to the WHO, one-third of the world’s women suffer from this. According to ABC News and the Washington Post, 54% of American women suffer from this type of exploitation. It is more common in younger women. But about 95% of the incidents are not made public. As the movement progressed the Tarana Burke Group came to the fore as a leader but she shows herself to be a worker. In different countries of the world, many policies were made and laws were made regarding this movement. Each country also criticized such an incident in strong words. We need to see the response it received in different countries of the world. However, the media admits that not all cases of me too are true. But the proportion of false reports is only 2% to 10%. Most women believe that no one will listen to them. And they suppress the whole event.

In the case of France, in 40% of the cases, the names that came up were fired.

In 2016, the Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission was formed in the US. In 25% to 85% of the cases, strick action was taken.

Japan has the lowest rate at just 4 percent.

If we go into the causes of sexual harassment, why don’t women complain? There are two reasons for this.

One is a power imbalance and the other is the inclusion of government media and news channels.

Both of these factors prevent women from speaking out.

So when will this thing come out? The effort in the UK is worth it. In the UK, women who do not want to be seen in public make a list of people in the industry or company that everyone should be aware of. It is called Hi-Libido MPS. The list of names of the perpetrators of these shameful acts is called the spreadsheet of shame which is personally delivered to each other. Which can be used to warn against such exploiters. The Member of Parliament also keeps a black book ready. And this open secret is revealed when the name of a famous man comes up. This effort was later adopted in the UK, US India, France, China, Japan, and Italy. In India too, the name of a college professor was published in this way and it went viral. A New York journalist published such a list. And shameful activists in the field of publishing and journalism had to quit their jobs. The journalist named it, shitty media man. This is about the steps taken in different countries.

Now we need to discuss two more issues.

The first issue is that of John Launer, England’s health education leader. He said that most of these cases are not a match of perception. That is, the person in front is just flirting and the woman feels that he is making inappropriate demands or harassment.

Professor Daniel Drezner has said that the me-too movement is about two cultures. Some people believe that sexual harassment in the workplace is not acceptable. While others believe that the powerful person uses his power in this way.

One should also look at the condition of a man in this whole incident. Often one in six men has suffered this. And after this movement, many men became nervous about their behavior. They didn’t know what to do. And what not to do? A situation arose in which even a simple gesture he could put him in trouble.

Now let’s see what the situation is like in India.

In India, the movement started with Bollywood Mumbai. In October 2018, Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Patekar of me too.

Then a stream started flowing in Bollywood. News India The Indian government started coming up against such incidents from all sectors. On October 5, 2018, Kangana Ranaut accused Vikas Bahl of having an affair with her during the Queen movie. Nayani Dixit, who co-starred with Kangana in the film, confirmed this

. Mahima kukri also later accused stand-up comedian and YouTuber Utsav Chakraborty. He was commenting on Mahima Kukreja at a stand-up comedian Utsav running a channel called All India BackChod. His two companions Krunal Kamra and Tanmay Bhat knew this.

On October 19 of the same year, an unidentified girl released some photos against the Yashraj film team. There were scenes of force kissing. Yashraj film inactivated its youtube channel. However, the team was left with the benefit of the doubt.

Sajid Khan on October 12, 2018, was also accused of such harassment during Housefull 4. The IFT suspended him for 1 year.

The allegations leveled by Pooja Mishra against the three brothers Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, and Sohil Khan will still be remembered by all.

Not only in Bollywood, the Tamil singer-songwriter and lyricist who got the Padma Vibhushan was also accused of being a new singer. The name of the accused is Vera Muthi

. Similar allegations were made against Anu Malik during the Indian Idol audition.

A similar allegation was leveled against Mukesh Chhabra, director of Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara.

Vinita Nanda, the lead actress of the TV serial Tara, made such an allegation against Alok Nath

Not only in Bollywood but also in news and media many such names were revealed. Times of India’s k. R. Srinivasa had to resign. Prashant Ja of Hindustan Times is also accused. So the well-known newsreader Vinod Dua was accused of going to Nishtha Jain.

Politics is no exception.

Similar allegations were leveled against M J Akabar who was the state affairs minister in October 2018. Fairoz Khan had to resign from the ING team Chhattisgarh on voice charges.

Court judges have also been affected.

In April 2019, Ranjan Gogoi, who was the Chief Justice, was accused by some members of the Supreme Court of India.

This is about the allegations against top people in different parts of India and the action taken against them. Here are some questions that come to my mind.

What has me to movement really done for ordinary women?

some of the top people have worked to increase their popularity under the charge of me too. But it is also a question of whether the people who actually become victims of this kind of phenomenon can reach twitter? Lower middle-class women for whom running a home is mandatory. Most of all they are victims. On the other hand are some poor working women who work in the construction industry and little girls from extremely poor families in remote areas. When will all this use #? Their voice will not reach Twitter. What can women’s organizations or social service groups do on their behalf? If I to movement is only working to expose the atrocities against women, then it should work for such women except for the top successful women. India has more population, less education. There are issues of poverty in every state. There is no work and the ultimate victims of every incident are the people who have no other choice but to do manual labor or hard work. Such people are mostly uneducated. They do not publish their cases in newspapers. Their interviews are not done. They will suppress such incidents to earn a living, not for publicity. If we can create a public # for this …..

The talk is incomplete…
