What is e-learning? Its benefits, Difficulties, and challenges
The term e-learning has been the talk of the town for the last few months. The Corona epidemic in particular has created an urgent need for e-learning. No one knows when the children will go to school but it is up to us to come up with an alternative! If we go to the origin of the word e-learning today, this word was first used in the 20th century. Although the term e-learning has not yet reached us, this year Bernard Luskin was the first to use a computer for educational purposes.
A little about the word e-learning.
It may come as a surprise to know that the concept of the word came to us in the twentieth century when we still did not fully understand the word or the idea. The birth of the word e-learning is relatively old. In 1999, Elliott Masie coined the term e-learning at a Disney World tech learn conference. And since then the word has come into commercial use.
Over the last twenty years, the term has been widely used not only in the field of education but also in fields like communication, information, training. The prevalence of e-learning has also been steadily increasing. There is nothing wrong with claiming that the Internet revolution has complemented e-learning.

Definition:
A learning system based on formalized teaching but with the help of electronic resources is known as E-learning. While teaching can be based in or out of the classrooms, the use of computers and the Internet forms the major component of E-learning. E-learning can also be termed as a network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge, and the delivery of education is made to a large number of recipients at the same or different times. Earlier, it was not accepted wholeheartedly as it was assumed that this system lacked the human element required in learning -Economic Times.
Simply put, e-learning means ‘electronic learning’ in which learning activities are carried out in the classroom or outside the classroom using electronic technology. With the help of which the capacity of the students can be increased. The morale of the students can be increased.
Prerequisite for e-learning
It is clear from the word e-learning that it has to do with today’s world i.e. technology. So your relationship with technology must be strong before you can enter this platform. It is also necessary to learn technology and also to accept technology. Basic computer knowledge is not enough for e-learning. Mandatory advance level knowledge is sometimes required. It would not be wrong to say that e-learning is not possible without technology.
Types of e-learning
Synchronous Learning — The word itself gives an idea of what kind of technique this will be. In this type of technique, teaching and learning take place from different places at the same time. Most of the live classes that are taken include Synchronous Learning. Most of the time now universities are teaching in this way. So the study of students who have been studying in important years is also moving forward in the same way.
Applications like Google Meet, Zoom App, and Microsoft Teams are very useful in this type of e-learning. In addition to this, e-learning is done through Doordarshan, All India Radio, satellite broadcasting on television.
This type of e-learning often raises the question of time constraints. Internet connection should also be good in this type of system otherwise connectivity issues come up.
Asynchronous Learning — In this type of technique the course is designed in advance by the teacher, moderator, or professor. A series of lectures or lectures are given to the students in advance. The student can watch and listen to the lectures or series of lectures at his convenience.
In this type of learning, people on both sides are not online at the same time. One can teach in one’s own time and study on one’s own. Time constraints are not involved in this type of learning but the students cannot express their difficulties as the person is not facing to face and the teacher on the other side does not even realize how much of what he teaches reaches the students.
This type of method uses tools like CD-ROM, Youtube Video, e-mail.
Thus, both types of methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is advisable to use both methods keeping in view the need.
