When did World Heart Day start?

World Heart Day is celebrated on 29 August every year. The intention of WHD is to create awareness about cardiovascular diseases and its prevention in society.

The World Heart Federation (WHF), in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO), announced the establishment of World Heart Day in 1999. The first celebration of World Heart Day took place on September 24, 2000. Till 2011, world Heart Day was celebrated on the last Sunday of September month.

Why Heart diseases are crucial?

Diseases related to the heart are widely seen all over the world. Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death worldwide. According to one research in the year In 2000, approximately 17 million people died due to cardiovascular diseases every year. And this year due to the COVID19 pandemic, people with Cardiovascular diseases are suffering more serious threats. So in such time taking care of our heart is more important than ever before.

Human Heart:

The human heart is roughly the size of a large fist. The heart weighs between about 280 to 340 grams.

It is made up of four chambers and several valves that regulate the normal flow of blood within the body. These chambers take in and distribute oxygen-poor or oxygen-rich blood simultaneously. You will be surprised to know that normal heart pumps about 100,000 times per day and about 3 billion beats in a lifetime. An adult heart beats about 60 to 80 times per minute in normal condition. This pumping cycle of the heart called the cardiac cycle. About 5.6 liters of blood circulates the body and three cardiac cycles are completed per minute.

If you are at 35+ age, go for regular checkup of Cholesterols, Diabetes and Blood pressure. Consume the medication as prescribed. Complete the course of medicines on time. Follow as per the advice of your family physician.

Eat a balanced and good diet. Add fresh fruits and vegetables on your regular diet.

Leave a sedentary lifestyle and try to be active. Do moderate exercise and yoga regularly. Try to walk 30 min minimum in a day. Indulge in regular physical activities such as gardening, cycling, using stairs in spite of lift, walking with pets, etc.

Start doing yoga every day. Don’t leave the habit very soon. Try to master them slowly and patiently. Yoga is the best indoor activity for a healthy heart, mind, and body.

Maintain healthy body weight. Check your Body Mass Index regularly. Know your family history properly.

Say No to tobacco in every form. Even if you are not smoker, try to avoid passive smoking. Quitting cigarettes completely is more advisable than to decrease cigarette smoking in numbers.

Sleep is an essential factor for a healthy heart and body. Try to get a minimum of 7–8 hours of sound sleep every day. Make a punctual sleep schedule. Go to bed on time. Avoid late-night food. Wake up early in the morning is more beneficial for health. Always give priority to sleep.
